After reading many reviews on this book, I was concerned it would kill my interest in Prince, but it was so good I couldn't put it down. Hahn can get a little repetitive on the forecasting of Prince's future-downfall angle (especially writing about the time Prince is still peaking!) but this is easily forgiven (ignored) for the insight into the beginnings, life and workings of a genius musician. The book reveals Prince as an ultimately flawed person (as are we all), with a talent, work ethic and ambition that would put most people in the shade. That his personal relationships fall victim to this is unsurprising, but the relationship of key people in his life and the relationship to his career ebbs and flows is fascinating. Wish Hahn would do an update on Prince's career since NPG and the last 10 years as it is clear his music has reinvented itself again, still continuing to inspire and develop despite his conversion to the Jehovah's Witness faith. Having read this book, and seen his recent concert, my interest in looking at Prince's recent and past work has intensified. Rediscovering his entire catalogue has been a total gift, reminding me of just how brilliant this man is across the span of his career. Must read for Prince fans.
