Jamestown: First English Colony is one of many volumes in the American Heritage Junior Library. This series is an introduction to key events and people in American history. This volume is a narrative of the founding and development of the Jamestown colony and the early history of colonial Virginia. Much of the book portrays key people and the role they played in the history of Jamestown and Virginia. The opening chapter describes Richard Hakluyt and his attempts to promote the glory of England by awakening his fellow countrymen's interest in exploration and colonization. Sir Walter Raleigh had great influence in raising money to outfit a colony in North America. Christopher Newport was the commander of the fleet which arrived and settled in Jamestown. John Smith's firm leadership enabled the success of Jamestown. John Rolfe and his tobacco plantation did much to improve the economy of Jamestown. Other topics covered in the book include the formation of the General Assembly, Bacon's Rebellion, the Cavaliers, and the establishment of William and Mary College. Numerous illustrations supplement the narrative. I did like this book but I would have liked more information on daily life in Jamestown. Still, Jamestown: First English Colony is a concise and informative introduction to a significant event in American history.
