Since Vatican II many Christian Churches have experienced liturgical renewal, and cultures have become increasingly aware of the interconnectedness of creation and the need to preserve the natural world. This study explores the interactions between these movements, giving suggestions for improving the environment of worship and for integrating ecological concerns into Christian liturgy. It provides pastors, preachers and parish liturgy committees with useful material for dealing with ecological issues in worship and in homilies. The book considers ecology as a moral issue, pointing out the need for a deeper concern for the common good. Father Mick then critiques the hyper-individualism of contemporary culture, and addresses the issues of social justice that affect the environment, including war and peace, global poverty, the consumerist approach to life, and the ecology of worship itself. The final chapter gives practical suggestions for fostering ecological concern in local worshipping communities, including the proper integration of ecological issues into the liturgy, promoting a fuller and richer use of symbols in worship, using authentic materials, and recognizing occasions for special celebrations that heighten environmental awareness. Father Mick Lawrence is also the author of "Worshipping Well: A Mass Guide for Planners and Participants", "To Live as We Worship", "Understanding the Sacraments Today", "Penance: The One and Future Sacrament" and "RCIA: Renewing the Church as an Initiating Assembly".
