McCormick's Synoptic NJ History is Right on Point
Published as part of "The New Jersey Historical Series," Richard P. McCormick's (1964) New Jersey from Colony to State is a must have, for example, for any genealogist serious about properly framing one's relatives within the context of NJ history. As regards the history of NJ, McCormick's work includes:

In summation, McCormick's work is great basic primer on NJ history. It includes a brief historical chronology (pp. 179-180) as well as a bibliographical note (pp. 176-178) which is where the reader must turn for the sources of his work (vice actual footnotes throughout the book).
