For most of the twentieth century, the region was dominated by a one-party system, the ""Solid South,"" that ensured both political unity internally and political influence in Washington. But in both centuries, the South suffered from the noncompetitive, one-party politics that differentiated it from the rest of the country. Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, Perman argues, the South's political distinctiveness has come to an end, as has its pursuit of unity.

I had a very old, well-used paperback version that I often fell back on when wanting some very tasty, old fashioned, comfort meals! I really loved this book for that reason, but found it difficult to get in the usual bookstores. When I found it here on Alibris, I was overjoyed and purchased it immediately. Now I have it and must say it came soon after ordering-----in very good condition! No problems. This cookbook is kept among my treasured ones with very solid recipes that remind me of the good, old-fashioned cooking of my grandmother who was born in 1882, did her own canning, made her own soap, made root beer, ice cream, and knew how to pick wild greens in the woods. Need I say more? It isn't gourmet or foreign, which I also enjoy, but is filled with familiar, southern, American dishes often missing these days. The layout is simple, clear, and easy to read. It's simplicity and order is its attraction.
