Other chapters explore the ways in which power and rationality were articulated in Christianity prior to the Reformation. Still others consider Salmon Rushdie's "Satanic Verses", firstly, as the textual representation of the objects anthropologists study (religion, migration, gender and cultural identity); secondly, as a political act in itself; and thirdly, as an example of the larger encounter between Western modernity and a non-Western "other".
