Seller's Description:
Very good in Very good jacket. 23 cm. 295, [1] pages. Illustrations. Occasional footnotes. Index. DJ is in a plastic sleeve. Guy Hartcup (13 May 1919-18 March 2012) was an author and military historian. His published works focused on the history of 20th-century military technology. In preparing this unusual book, outstanding commanders of British military services and leading defense scientists were asked to name the scientific and engineering contributions considered by them to have had the greatest influence on the outcome of World War Two. The forty-one items submitted range from radar and rockets to antimine and antitorpedo devices. In this detailed study, the author sets out to trace the progress of each idea from the originator's minds to its eventual arrival as a piece of finished equipment ready for battlefield or other military application. Above all, this is a fascinating study of another conflict, the battle of wits waged by scientists of opposing nations who, in times of war, often determine their country's victories and defeats long before the soldiers meet to do battle.
