Sarai, the last child of her aged father, is beautiful, spoiled, and used to getting her own way. Even as a young girl, she is aware of the way men look at her, including her half brother Abram. When Abram finally requests Sarai's hand, she asks one thing--that he promise never to take another wife as long as she lives. Even her father thinks the demand is restrictive and agrees to the union only if Sarai makes a promise in return--to give Abram a son and heir. Certain she can easily do that, Sarai agrees. The first in the series Wives of the Patriarchs, I loved this book. It covers the life of Sarah and Abraham and includes the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Even if you?re familiar with the story, you almost forget you know what happens next. Mrs. Smith writes stories with such depth, you feel you know the characters. You get a real sense of how long they waited for Isaac and how impossible it seemed to them. I especially understood Sarah?s jealousy of Hagar. I even felt for Hagar and her need to be loved. I would have liked to see it extended to the sacrifice of Isaac, but I have a feeling that will show up in the next book, Rebekah.
