Every once in awhile, people find themselves enveloped in a cocoon, completely incased in a world where ?the body gets what it wants?, but the soul is left craving what it needs. In the 11th book by Eoin Colfer, THE SUPERNATURALIST, 14 year old Cosmos finds himself living a life of need at the Clarissa Fraye Institute for Parentally Challenged, an interesting euphemism for orphanage . This institution is used to further scientific study of chemical products and the children find themselves the guinea pigs. Non- sponsors, the label given to the orphans, resisting their oppressors are ?wrapped? in a cellophane/sedative infused cocoon. There are only two ways to get out of Fraye, death or escape.
The book begins with Cosmos, the main character, residing at this questionable state institute. Life changes for Cosmos when he and Ziplock (another parentally challenged inmate) manage to escape. In the ensuing chase, Cosmo?s finds himself lying injured (the result of a fall from the roof of a building) lying next to friend, with a blue translucent creature hovering above him. ?Strange inhuman creatures??.crawling at amazing speed with no regard for gravity.?
Thus begins the story of Cosmos and the Supernaturalists, a group of young people vent on finding and destroying the ?blue parasites?. Cosmo plays his role not unlike Neo the reluctant hero in MATRIX, new to the game and yet a naturally quick leaner. The story takes on some interesting twists that keep the reader turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next.
Eoin Colfer manages to keep his reader engrossed in the adventures of Cosmos, Mona, Stephan, and Ditto (an experiment in genetic manipulation gone ?awry?). A former primary school teacher, Colfer is the author of 11 books. His most successful series thus far is ARTEMIS FOWL. Adolescent readers will find themselves caught up in this action packed science fiction thriller. All in all a 4 out of 5.
