I am an avid history reader and rarely venture into fiction. To be honest, I read this book only because I saw and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The book and movie are quite different but both are very good on their own. This was my first experience reading an Alice Hoffman novel and I was delighted. Her style is quite elegant in its flow; I found myself immediately immersed in the story and the characters. If you are turned off by spooks, specters, and other un-worldly things, don't let that stop you from reading this wonderfully paced book. There is just enough of that to grab and hold your attention but not so much as to create a distraction. A wonderful story. I know I'll be reading more of Alice Hoffman's works.
