I read this book for a Children's literature class and really enjoyed the humorous tone and interesting plot twists in the novel. This year, I have had the opportunity to share it with 5th graders, connecting it to their study of the Depression and jazz music. While some elements of the plot and Curtis's indirect messages are a bit over their heads, the students are very engaged in the story and its humor. Vivid images like having a pencil in Bud's nose ("the whole room smelled like an eraser") and a roach screaming inside Bugs's ear are very memorable for the students.
