Hewey Calloway is pretty much your typical Elmer Kelton protagonist--rootless, a drifter--one who gets into trouble without half trying. But when the chips are down, and he is needed, in this case to help his brother who had settled down and was raising a family, he does what needs to be done. Elmer Kelton creates mostly believable characters who act and behave the way a lot of people we know behave. That is what made him the author he was.

Real West
This book is an enjoyable, quick read that includes lots of info about how people really were during those times.

Not only a GREAT WESTERN, but a well written book. A pleasure to read and looking forward to more of Kelton's work.
