A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs. So enters one of the most memorable characters in recent American fiction. The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize-winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans. This book has become an American comic masterpiece.

Ive read glowing reviews of this book and cant understand why it is praised. It had a few funny moments and some of the characters were interesting but I never felt connected to any of them. I never cared about what was going to happen to them or to the story itself. Not sure of the purpose of the story. What was the author trying to tell me? At almost 400 pages I just wanted to finish it so I could get to a book that enjoyed. Cant say that I enjoyed reading this story.

a masterpiece but not my taste
This is a confounding book, and though I appreciate its genius, it is not my cup of tea. Yes, it is funny, but the characters that populate it are so distasteful it is difficult to go along with the joke. If the reader can perservere, the ending is mostly worth it.

Hilarious book by funny writer. Too bad he is not around to write more books!

okay
Ignatius is a bit of an irritant. The book has it's moments when it is funny, but the editors notes pay it more justice than I feel it deserves. It does keep you reading and not losing interest waiting for his next caper. I think in many cases the author was writing about himself.
