This is a monument to all the "wild and free" horses, the mustangs, which were once the glory of the western ranges, and to men, both white and native American who captured them, "gentled" them, rode them and annihilated them. He traces the descent of the mustang from the horses brought to the New World by the Spaniards and he writes of some of the special ones, men and horses, who made that era what it was.
