I think this is one of the best books for self-learners. Together with the continuing book 'intermediate chinese' (Yong Ho) it is equal to a one year course at university. The vocabulary is focused on practicality and avoids "college-dialogue". Despite the small size of the book there are many exercises in each chapter, altough I would have liked to have had more drill-based grammar exercises. The audio is also good. I want to particularly mention the grammar, Dr.Ho is a both an anthropologist and linguist and this shows in his explanations, I think they are clearer and deeper than in other books I have used.
