What makes SURREALISM: THE DREAM OF REVOLUTION a helpful book is its intimate look at Surrealism as a living art form, a form that changed with the times and its numerous creators. As an art movement, it touched many aspects of what fantasy and reality are as components of existence. Well-crafted, the book reads well and gives the reader the nuts and bolts of what the surrealists were about. The book is enjoyable reading. Richard Leslie is to be congratulated as a writer who tackled a difficult subject, and who successfully made it accessible to all while clearly explaining the material involved. The reader will find the many notable artists of the movement covered, including the French poet Andre Breton, Duchamp, Max Ernst, Miro, Arp, Dali, Masson, Magritte, Giacometti, Oppenheim, Dorothea Tanning, Matta, among others. Photography, plays, and film are discussed. By opening new doors of perception, the surrealists gave the world an opportunity for developing a true alternate vision to what they had been accustomed to, and by so doing, opened the doors to new ideas. Well-illustrated, this is a book that the reader will enjoy having on hand as a reference. This book covers the legacy of Surrealism and its innovators. Excellent book! As a surrealist artist, I found the book refreshing frank, honest, and attractive to look at with its many fine illustations.
