Lewis is an all together familiar character, whether you're a lawyer or not. He shares a flat with a mate from university, he works more hours than he doesn't, he goes for dinner in the canteen downstairs every night, and when he gets the chance he goes for a few pints round the corner with mates from his intake. He is surrounded by over demanding clients and over demanding bosses, and spends his life juggling unrealistic deadlines with his family and friends. Whilst desperately trying to cling onto his job and sanity and to keep his mistake concealed, the young lawyer's ordered life at the firm and at home becomes increasingly distant. However, as he wades deeper into the mire, he unwittingly begins to realise where his priorities should lie-with his dying brother and some full and frank disclosure the like of which he hasn't yet been required to give. On Cape Three Points is a great read. For the first time, as far as I'm aware, someone has committed to print an eloquent (and at times painfully familiar) summary of life in a big law firm. As well as a breathless sprint through the life of an unfortunate young lawyer who gets caught out, Chris' novel is also a serious study of how our job shapes, or perhaps bends, our characters, throwing events and situations out of perspective.
