I purchased this second book in the trilogy, only because I (obviously) fell in love with the characters in the first book: The White Mare. I'm a true-blue Diana Gabaldon fan, and since I had exhausted the Outlander series, I found myself looking for something similar, and this series definitely fits the bill! Set in ancient Scotland ("Alba"), the two main characters are an unlikely couple that somehow "fit" together, despite their differences, much like Gabaldon's Jamie and Claire. The atmosphere of war and strife is a common backdrop, as well as Scotland, only these books incorporate a bit of the "spiritual", if you will, in the way of Priestess Rites and healing herbs and chants, although it's not enough to get you rolling your eyes, or thinking you walked into a witches' den, either. Just interesting...I find myself unable to settle in at night, until I've read at least a chapter or two! Passionate romance, deep emotional trauma, action and humor all abound in this series, so far. I highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of the Outlander series, or any other types of "historical fiction/romance" novels that don't really fit into a given genre!
