In mid-1941 the British War Cabinet gave SOE permission to study the possibility of assassinating the Fuhrer. At this low point in the war for Britain, Churchill had good reason to seek the "removal" of the heavily guarded Nazi dicatator. But, there was a very real worry that the Gestapo would use the assassination as an excuse for wholesale executions of actual or suspected members of resistance movements.
