This is set during the English campaign against the French in Spain (the Peninsular War mentioned in many of her Regency romances). It's full of period color and detail, and possibly more than I wished to know about the Peninsular campaign. If the characters are less engaging than most of Ms. Heyer's creations, it is because she didn't create them--Harry Smith and Juana are historical figures, and I believe Ms. Heyer may have tried not to depict them in any way for which she had not found documentation. Like all her books (except maybe the mysteries), well worth reading.
