The theft of the diamond necklace and the antique pistols might all be explained, but the body in the lake - that was a puzzle. "Don't expect me to solve anything," Inspector Wilkens announced modestly when he arrived to sort out the unpleasantness. Agatha C. would approve of the setting and the plot of this charming mystery set at the country house party with the various characters that are never who they seem to be. I did figure out who the murderer was before the last chapter but I enjoyed the book anyway, especially the night when the murder was committed: nearly everyone in the house party was in the halls or on the stairs in the dark rushing around stealing guns, putting them back, using a secret passage, killing other guests, wounding the detective, and in general causing mayhem without anyone being seen. It takes real talent to write that scene and keep track of everything and everybody. Wonderfully entertaining!

great read = surprise ending
I really enjoyed this book. It's a take off on the old fashioned who dunit! Great fun, good mystery and lots of laughs. Would love to see a tv series on the characters. I like a cozy and this is a cozy with a good mystery. I'm sick of so many tough, gritty, real life, etc. stuff. It was nice to enjoy the characters and just enough description to let you use your imagination. Did not expect the solution - and I love to be surprised. Most mysteries you know who did it by the second chapter. This was a surprise to me, but I liked the way it was worked out.
