I started reading James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels somewhere in the middle, which is what my library had. Got really caught up in Dave's tortured psyche and past, and this novel takes you back to what happened to form him: how he rescued Alafair, his adopted daughter, how his young wife came to her bloody end, etc. Lots of good Dave-stuff here.

Gritty characters who always seem to walk the line between danger and humanity. Burke's colorful depictions of his charactersand the area simply transforms the reader inside the storyline. The author introduces Alafair and in spite of language differences smoothly integrates her into story. The constant struggle with good and evil, right and wrong and the psychological ying and yang that Robicheaux deals with daily makes for fascinating reading. Burke merits comparison with southern Gothic type authors and is by far one of the top writers in his genre,
