Orphaned Kit Tyler knows, as she gazes for the first time at the cold, bleak shores of Connecticut Colony, that her new home will never be like the shimmering Caribbean island she left behind. In her relatives' stern Puritan community, she feels like a tropical bird that has flown to the wrong part of the world, a bird that is now caged and lonely. The only place where Kit feels completely free is in the meadows, where she enjoys the company of the old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, and on occasion, her young sailor friend Nat. Elizabeth George Speare is a wonderful storyteller! Kit, raised in luxury on the sun-dazzled island of Barbados, is forced to move to Puritan New England to live with her aunt and uncle. The story tells of her struggles to fit in and her forbidden friendship with the town "witch". This story will strike a chord with any reader who has ever felt like a misfit.

Memorable
I first read this book when I was a young teen. I have read thousands of books since, being an avid reader. It remains one of the first books I can recall reading and some 40 years later the title stirs up the descriptive settings of the book and interesting characters. I recommend it to any lover of a good tale - including myself at this stage of my perhaps more demanding self.
