Charmingly illustrated with the line drawings of Kurt Wiese, these books are a remarkable achievement in children's literature In Freddy the Detective, Freddy, inspired by reading about Sherlock Holmes, sets up in business as a detective and solves a series of very mysterious cases, beginning with the disappearance of the children's toy train. All the animals become involved, there is a frame-up, and the climax is the great trial scene in the barn, where Freddy and Ferdinand the Crow are the opposing lawyers, and Charles the Rooster, the judge.

The Freddy books should be on your bookshelf, right next to your other vintage treasures. I cannot count the times I laughed while reading this book. Freddy the pig is such an interesting creature, and he has such fascinating animal pals. He attempts to take on the job of a detective, such as Sherlock Holmes does. Sudden mysteries around Mr. Bean's farm come to Freddy, and he uses his sleuthing skills to track down the culprits of such crimes. I do so enjoy the wit of Mrs. Wiggins the cow, and then constant bantering between Charles the rooster and Henrietta the hen. Oh, and the mice, rabbits, and Jinx the cat all add sprightly drama to the story too. Children should absolutely love Freddy and his friends!
Thankfully, I have the rest of the Freddy books to keep me busy, until I decide to read all of them again!
