The book is produced entirely from the hand-lettered page and illustrated throughout. Joan Freeman's work includes designs for ecclesiastical embroidery, in particular for York Minster, St Albans Abbey and Durham Cathedral. She has designed book jackets and record sleeves and wood engraving illustrations for two Folio Society books, "The Mabinogion" and "The Wandering Scholars".
