In the twelfth-century Brother Cadfael settled down to a quiet life in charge of the herbarium at the Benedictine Abbey--at age 60 or so--after a life of adventure. An unseemly quarrel breaks out during the great annual Fair of St. Peter at Shrewsbury between the local burghers and the monks--and afterwards a monk is found dead.
