When the Brits were to receive the Japanese surrender in Java, now Indonesia, the imprisoned Dutch descendants of the colonizing Dutch East India Company wanted to go back to "their" property. The Allies scrambled to figure out how to read the situation - van der Post is a master observer. [Check out his biography of friend Jung to fully appreciate his keen sensitivities.] Laurens van der Post is S.African by birth, fought with the British and was himself incarcerated. We all could benefit from this lesson in recognizing liberty. My Dutch relatives were also incarcerated, one cousin born in a camp.

Remarkable Insights
Van Der Post has a lot to say about the nature of war itself and the need to really understand each nation and its culture. In his view the Japanese who imprisoned him cruelly became men of honor and responsibility while at the same time the Dutch who had suffered so much during the war become the villians and both in an instant. Each personality in his narative is appreciated by the author in such a sensitive manner that it moved this reader to view his own world in a different way. This author has a lot to say about the world in which we live which he anicipated in so many ways.
