If you have yet to discover the preschool books by Shirley Hughes, I encourage you to search for them. Publishers, please consider reprinting or reissuing this title and all others by Hughes. I never tire of sharing the collections focused on Alfie and his little sister Annie Rose and the Olly and Me books, plus "Don't Want to Go" with character Lily. The very youngest toddlers will enjoy the author's simple board books with these same children. I track down these hard-to-find,well-written, universally applicable books in our library system--but the books are usually languishing in the children's archives; I request to young librarians (unfamiliar with these classics) that they consider making room for them on the browsing shelves for a new generation of readers. My granddaughter, age 3, would love to own all of them for her personal library because she can enjoy the artwork when "reading" solo; plus, she recalls all of the children's names--like personal friends--and enjoys their adventures and retells them on her own. The children go outdoors, interact with others, and solve little child dilemmas with the help of their families--a delightful change from bombardment by videos and technology and commercially-licensed characters. Yes, the children are British and some of the vocabulary is slightly unfamiliar; this simply generates more discussion between reader and child. The realistic, detailed pictures, likewise, promote more observations and conversations during reading time. The poetry of Shirley Hughes is fresh and motivates children to appreciate beautiful language and phrasing.
