Written by a single author with four decades of clinical experience, this text discusses the underlying pathophysiology of hypertensive diseases with emphasis on the most common form, essential hypertension. It covers efficient patient evaluation, treatment algorithms, target organ involvement, hypertensive emergencies and co-morbid conditions. The evaluation of the patient with hypertension is presented with justification for the use and analysis of each of the laboratory investigations. A treatment algorithm is discussed with its rationale for the patient with relatively uncomplicated hypertension. Treatment of the patient with hypertension having target organ involvement (heart, kidneys, brains) is discussed in detail. Other aspects of antihypertensive therapy dealing with the various co-morbid diseases are discussed as well as the approach to treatment with respect to the demographic characteristics of the patient with hypertension.
