Before "The Godfather" and "The Last Don", there was Puzo's classic story about the loves, crimes and struggles confronted by one family of New York City immigrants living in Hell's Kitchen. Fresh from the farms in Italy, Lucia Santa struggles to hold her family together in a strange land. At turns poignant, comic and violent, and with a new preface by the author, "The Fortunate Pilgrim" is Italian-American fiction at its very best.

This is by far the best book that Mario Puzo ever wrote. The characters are so vivid, so lovingly described, that, especially if you come from an Italian American background, you will identify them as people you have known and loved. Even if you don't you will have almost the same feeling. The centrality of the mother to Italian Americans is the dominant theme of the book and in lovingly depicting her( I suspect Puzo has based her on his own mother) Puzo has created one of the great characters in all of literature. Everybody has read The Godfather but too few have read this magnificent story by the same author. Do yourself a favor read it now.

The Fortunate Pilgrim
This is a excelent book one of my selected Puzo books, I have read this start to finish in one day because of how good it is,I just could not put it down. You just get pulled into the story so easy and enjoy it so much that you cant put it down untill you are finished. I loved the detail of the writing I feel like I am there Puzo is great at detail. The story is about the life of Lucia Santa and her six children. this is a very in powerful book. This woman travels on her own with her six children to New York City's Hell's Kitchen. The effort this woman goes through to get her and her children is astounding, you can tell she loves her kid's to go to all the trouble just for the better of her and her kid's lives. you will love this book just like I did, I dont buy books I dont like and I love this one as will you. You will never want to put it down just like I didnt, untill I finished it.
