A broken heart leads Kevin Patterson to the dock of a sailboat brokerage on Vancouver Island, where he stands contemplating the romance of the sea and his heartfelt desire to get away. By the end of the day, he finds himself the owner of a thirty-seven-foot ketch called "Sea Mouse." Although he's never really been on the ocean before (aside from the odd ferry-ride), he feels compelled to sail to Tahiti and back, to burn away his failings in hard miles at sea.

If you get seasick just reading about about storms on the ocean, don't read this book. If you are a sailor who takes his/her task seriously, don't read this book. If irresponsible, selfish people drive you crazy, don't read this book. But if you want to learn about the majesty of the Pacific Ocean or delve into the inner recesses of a man's mind, then do read this book. The narrator irritated me no end because he was such a shallow , thoughtless person, but I was still fascinated by him. I kept reading to try to figure out what motivated him. I wanted to know if his epic journey would change him. Who could go through what he did and not be changed, I wondered. You'll have to read the book yourself to see if he does.
