This is one of my favorite all-time books. It is clearly dated and of little technical interest any more, but the writing is pleasant, and the story is timeless. Synopsis: True story of a Berkeley post-doc who, trying to reconcile 75-cent discrepancy in computer account, uncovers foreign intruder using Berkeley system as gateway to US military installations. One reason I enjoy re-reading it periodically is that I used most of the now-obsolete computer systems, including PDP-8, PDP-10, VAX, and KERMIT file transfer software. I personally experienced the friendly conflict in the opening chapter between the VMS and UNIX gurus (I come down on the VMS side) and I especially appreciated the vignette in which it was concluded that the intruder was not from California because of his UNIX dialect.
