Seller's Description:
Very good. Tight spine has some very subtle creasing. Clean, unmarked interior. Some toning to the inside covers and some areas of very subtle soiling and creasing to the book's exterior. A book whose title came from Henry Adams's eponymous 1880 novel (a fictionalization of Ulysses Grant's second presidential term) and is notable for its genre-blurring narration by Didion herself, who chronicles the exploits of her fictitious acquaintance, Inez, a senator's wife having an affair with a war-profiteering CIA agent. Didion prized this book above all of her others, and a contemporary review by Mary McCarthy compared its structure to that of a jigsaw puzzle. This chic little mass-market edition's cover features an embossed and ominously line-broken title. 222 pp. Mass-Market Paperbacks.

I have read Democracy several times over the years and I'm always impressed with new things I find in it. And it is pretty phenomenal how much Didion can convey with relatively few words. But what I really love about this novel is the way I feel as Didion gets me to piece together almost with her the story of Inez and Jack. There is this haunting sense of both personal alienation and dissolutionment in a world and time that promised so much and delivered something else. And is this betrayal merely around us or is it in us? But for a few brief shining moments, jack and Inez do dare to try to put it together and that is so cool.
