If I were more familiar with Don Quixote, I would have gotten more out of this book. As it was, it was interesting, but far from spell-binding.

Variation on a Theme by Cervantes
Monsignor Quixote is one of Graham Greene's late entertainments, a variation on Cervantes's classic novel set in the Spanish town of El Toboso, which traces the title character's journey to Madrid accompanied by the recently deposed Marxist mayor of the village who goes by the name of Sancho. Even in its lightness of tone, the novel is exceptionally well-written and parallels Cervantes in the duo's picaresque adventures, hounded by Franco's Guardia and an inflexible, dogmatic priest who believes Quixote insane. Greene's reputation rests justifiably on serious efforts such as The Quiet American and The End of the Affair, but even in Monsignor Quixote he poses provocative notions about faith and doubt. Humorous, intriguing, and moving, this light entertainment is superior to most other novelists' best work.
