The next day Mrs. Van Metre received by mail the following letter, the original Of which has been in the hands of the author of this book. It proves that her conduct was highly appreciated by Secretary Stanton at the time, and is one Of the numerous evidences which have been fur nished of the truth Of the narrative here given.
