Excerpt from A Manual of Foreign Exchanges in the Direct, Indirect, and Cross Operations of Bills of Exchange and Bullion: Including an Extensive Investigation of the Arbitrations of Exchange, According to the Practice of the First British and Foreign Houses, With Numerous Formul� and Tables of the Weights and Measures of Other Countries, Compared With the Imperial Standards IN the composition of an extensive work on Exchanges upon which I have been for some years engaged, I found it necessary to combine, in the form of an introduction, the explanations of the principles of those arithmetical pro cesses which are of general application, in order both to save much repetition, and to admit of that minuteness which is requisite to give a clear conception of their purport. This however could not well be accomplished without the working of many examples, and the use of many formulas, and when these were introduced the whole appeared too bulky, and, I may add, too elementary to constitute part of a treatise confined to the Practice of Exchanges. I have therefore adapted the suggestion of some of my commercial Friends, and made a separate volume of these materials, Imitad with a brief notice of other subjects of most general utility; considering that the whole would form a compen dium very convenient for reference, and would contain sutfi cient information to answer the purposes of many of those who desire to consult a Work upon Exchanges.
