Some years later the lad studied harmony and instrumentation with Sey fried, a noted teacher. He began to support himself as a violin player in a string quartet and a Violinist'in a caf� orchestra. His next connection was with Lanner in a quartet, an organization which soon grew to be a small orchestra. Of this Lanner and Strauss acted as conductors. In 1826, however, Strauss got together an orchestra of fourteen men and gave a series of concerts in a favorite suburb of Vienna during the carnival season, taking the people by storm. His first waltzes won instant approval. With an enlarged orchestra he began playing in a popular amusement place in the city, the Sperl, on a six years' engagement, during the course of which his reputation as an orchestral con ductor was established.
