I enjoyed this book but was mildly disappointed. The source of my disappointment was the description of the story placed on the back of the book was very misleading. My advice, read the book without expecting the story line to follow the published description. There is less of a romance between the two main characters. I also failed to figure out the full purpose of including the German/English interrogator. What exactly was his role in the story? He was likable but there just never seemed to be an impact from his character and the book begins with his character. Still, it is an entertaining story and I would have no problems recommending it to friends if they don't expect too much. Wink.

How Green Was His Valley
Peter Ho Davies being the son of a Chinese mother and Welsh father set this story of the common people of Wales during the end of the second world war. His barmaid was a reluctant mother who chose to take the high road in the end. Relationships with her father, her boyfriends, and the German POW were soundly grounded in a very literate and understandable way. Although there is no plot in this tale it does bring memory back of How Green Was My Valley by Richard Lleweyln (sic) and how Susan Howatch's mammoth Wheel of Fortunate. Another good Welsh author is Rosie Thomas. The Welsh were a part of a six language Celtic peoples who immigrated from eastern Europe and had colonies in the British Isles and France. The others were Irish, Manx, Breton, Scotch, and Irish.
