Fast paced interesting read
Interesting combination of story line with enough drama and adventure to keep you reading interspersed with information on how humans survived before modern times. The author provided interpretation of events that I appreciated because I might not have come to the same understanding without it.

First in a series
First in a series of novels that follow the life of a child orphaned during the Ice Age. The description of societal rules, vegetation, climate changes, and animals has been well researched by this author. You will be transported back in time to experience archeology.

Excellent Journey!
I read Clan of the Cave Bear and started on the "journey" several years ago. Our niece is now 13, and we bought this for her for Christmas to start her on the "journey." It is extremely well-written and well-researched. Jean Auel is superb in making her characters real. You feel like you're a part of them and have known them all your life. We will keep our niece on the "journey" with each of the Earth Children books. Can't wait until a new one comes out. I keep watching the web for any news. I strongly recommend this book for everyone!

Vivid Journey to Prehistory
Upon reading the first chapter, I fell in love with the descriptions of the land, animals, and the characters of this book. I was hooked from the beginning and destined to buy not only all 5 books in series, but have read and reread them as well. Jean Auel, allows you to see the shortcomings of the moral fiber of humankind as well as the strengths. She has researched and allowed the reader to imagine the beginnings of the uses of many of the things we take for granted as always being there. She also allows us to experience the fear and appreciate the courage of the hearty People called "Clan" as Ayla a human child learns to live among them. Great read! But buyer beware, you will find this one hard to put down,
