I love this book. 40 years ago when I first discovered this book I wanted to crawl into the pages and live in the round room. I am so excited to have a copy of this book to put in my collection as soon as I reread it, of course.

A childhood favorite
Since I was a young girl, I have always loved to read. I would devour book after book...never reading the same book twice. Then I came across a worn copy of "The Velvet Room" at the town library book sale. Pale pink and worn around the edges, it's very essence called to me. Robin and her story were both sad and inspiring, and I would float away with her to her special room, passing the hours away, reading. I adored this book, and read it again and again. I still own this book today, and take it down now and then, just to reminisce.

Find a comfy chair and read on
This story brings out the dreamer in me. I was touched by the main character, Robin, when I first read this. I felt I knew just what she was feeling. Most little girls want a special place to dream and pretend and Robin finds hers. For the daughter of a migrant worker during the Dust Bowl era, this escape is very important. When her special place is in jeopardy, she must make some hard choices. The book shares the dismal conditions of the Great Depression - the lack of security, the "wanting", without being depressing. We feel the heat, smell the fruit, and see the cool shadows of the Velvet Room. It is a story of friendships and I recommend it highly.
