A well-written fictional story that describes, in a poignant and sensitive narrative, the experiences of one family of children, among the tens of thousands of poor children who rode the "Orphan Trains" from the slums of NY City to the cities and rural towns of the American midwest, from the 1850's to 1929, in search of host families who would provide them good homes and nurturing.
This is a short, easy but rewarding (and enlightening) read for adults; and it's a great story for a pre-teen girl who can probably identify with the principal character, a girl of 12 who, as the oldest of several siblings being "outplaced", grows up quickly beyond her years as the story develops to a satisfying conclusion.
I first encountered this story as a book borrowed from the local library, but then I purchased a copy as a gift for my 10-going-on-13 granddaughter.
