Mightily Oats has not picked a good time to be priest. He thought he'd come to the mountain kingdom of Lancre for a simple little religious ceremony. Now, he's caught up in a war between vampires and witches, and he's not sure there is a right side. There's the witches - young Agnes who is really in two minds about everything, Magrat, who is trying to combine witchcraft and nappies, Nanny Ogg who is far too knowing...and Granny Weatherwax, who is big trouble. And the vampires are intelligent - not easily got rid of with a garlic enema or going to the window, grasping the curtains and saying 'I don't know about you, but isn't it a bit stuffy in here?' They've got style and fancy waistcoats. They're out of the casket and want a bite of the future. Mightily Oats knows he has a prayer, but he wishes he had an axe.

Carpe Jugulum (Go for the throat) is the motto of a family of Vampires who want to take over Lancre and become "modern". this is another in the series of Witch books and follows "Lords and Ladies" chronologically. the problem is that there are already people who hold Lancre...including the new queen, (and witch) Magrat Garlik, Agnes/Perdita Nitt, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. As you might suspect, they have definite opinions about the desirability of Vampires as the rulers in Lancre!
A VERY good book, and features some of my favorite characters. Igor, The vampyres, Granny and her headology, perpetually flustered wet hen Magrat and her attempt to insure her daughter's name be spelled correctly, Hodgesargh the Falconer (it isn't really Hodgesargh, but that IS how he usually introduces himself as some vicious hawk or other tries to eat his ear when he is speaking to someone!) Agnes Nitt and her alter ego Perdita, and of COURSE Nanny Ogg and her evil cat Greebo! what a FUN book!
this is a really wonderful book! I am addicted to Terry Pratchett!
