Entertaining, & humorous fantasy!
This is the first book by Sir Terry Pratchett in his wonderful, amusing, vastly entertaining Discworld series.* This series resulted in his being given his Knighthood in England for his "services to literature". The audio version is read very well and totally entertaining.
It concerns a visitor, Mr. Twoflower, to the city of Ankh-Moorpork, his Luggage (made out of sapient pearwood ) which follows him everywhere on it's many little feet, and the wizard, Rincewind, who he hires as a guide, and is excellent at keeping them running away from troubles that abound.
I not only highly recommend getting this book, but also the entire, amazing, satiric, complexly entertaining Discworld series. Run, don't walk, and buy one of these fantasies--- that pulls me out of the doldrums every time I read one of the more than 30 books in series. Be aware the books for children or teens are not really just that; they are in fact as excellent as all his books.
An Unabashed, Tremendous Fan ;-)
*His use of footnotes adds tons of humorous asides to the already amusing stories.

Beautiful!
This is the first Discworld book and still one of the best. It's a beautiful tale within itself, but still means that you want to carry on reading.
The characters still seem fresh and new, and the mystery and fantasy are really lovely.

The first book in a great series.
I came across the Discworld series late through an anthology called Legends. After reading the short story "Sea and Little Fishes", I went back through Pratchetts' series rather haphazardly. After reading the a number of other books, I finally picked up the Colour of Magic, and to be honest, if I had started with it, I probably wouldn't have read the rest.
I love his sense of humor, and the story is a good parody of the genre, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I love the rest of the series. Still, it's a good way to get familiar with the series.
