In order for Pierce's fans to embrace "Melting Stones," they will have to be willing to get to know a character outside the original four young mages of the Circle series. I am glad that the character Pierce chose to expand was Evvy; I always found her to be the most charismatic and interesting of the quartet's students.
The external plot of "Melting Stones" deals with natural phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and the geological processes involved. Evvy, a stone mage, is very in touch with rocks and the forces of the earth which impact them, but she is not so skilled just yet with other human beings. Here it is quite obvious that the author did a vast amount of research into geology, as the entire book is suffused with Evvy's awareness and alertness for the stones around her, and it is absolutely believable that her power is aligned with these things.
The more subtle plot in Melting Stones deals with Evvy's emotional life and her journeys under earth's crust, where her magic would allow her to melt into the surrounding magma. The conflict then becomes whether she has a strong enough tie to her human life and to the people in it to resist losing herself in the swirl of earth spirits below. After her childhood as an escaped slave, then surviving a civil war during her travels with her teachers, this could be more difficult than it sounds. It is a compelling struggle and well worth the read.
