Die Physiologische Bedeutung der Pflanzencultur: Zwei Vortr�ge, Gehalten im St�ndehause im Winter des Jahres 1860 Nachdem der erw�hnte Priester zuerst darauf hin weiset, wie nur Aegypten das Land sein k�nne, wo sich Spuren der �ltesten Begebenheiten des Menschenge schlechtes erhalten haben, er�ffnet er Solon dass Griechenland und namentlich Athen schon eine sehr alte Geschichte habe, die leider im Lande selbst ver loren gegangen sei; er machte ihn aufmerksam, wie dieses Land von der Gottin Neith (athenae) noch fr� her als Sa'1's gegr�ndet, schon in den �ltesten Zeiten eine geordnete Staatsverfassung, eine grosse geistige und strategische Macht besass. "denn da, so spricht er, "die G�ttin den Krieg eben sowohl als die Weisheit liebt, w�hlte sie denjenigen Ort aus zur Gr�ndung eines Staates, welcher die ihr �hnlichsten M�nner hervor bringen w�rde. Unter solchen Gesetzen und noch sch� neren staatlichen Einrichtungen lebtet ihr damals, alle anderen Menschen an Tugend �bertreffend, wie es sich f�r solche geziemt, die von G�ttern entsprossen und erzogen sind. Viele nun und grosse Werke eures Staates, die hier (in unseren Schriften) verzeichnet sind, setzen in Erstaunen. Eines aber �bertrifft alles andere an Gr�sse und Herrlichkeit. Denn die Schriften be richten, wie ener Staat einst ein Ziel setzte einer Macht, die in grossem Uebermuthe gegen ganz Europa und Asien heranzog, von jenseits hereinbrechend aus dem atlantischen Meere, denn damals konnte man jenes Meer beschiffen. Vor jener M�ndung n�mlich, welche ihr nach eurer Aussage die S�ulen des Herkules nennt, lag eine Insel, gr�sser als Lybien und Asien zusammen. Von ihr konnten damals die Seefahrer zu den andern Inseln kommen, und von diesen Inseln auf das ganze Festland gegen�ber, welches um jenes eigentliche Meer sich ausdehnte. Denn das Meer, welches innerhalb jener M�ndung liegt, von der wir reden, scheint ein See mit enger Einfahrt, jenes aber w�rde mit vollem Rechte ein Meer und das daran stossende Land ein Festland genannt werden.
