They are combated stoutly by Jules Flammermont in his valuable volume' La Journ�e du I4 Juillet, published in 1892 for the Soci�t� de l'hist01re de la R�volution Francaise. His volume exists ostensibly for the purpose of printing the fragment of the unpublished memoirs of L. G. Pitra, which treat of the events of July 14, but the fragment only occupies some fifty pages and comes at the heels of an introduction five times as long, written to resent the belittlement of the' taking of the Bastille. He regards this belittlement as the work of re actionaries, as a piece of counter-revolutionism. Yet a study of all the arguments compels the conclusion that the Bastille suffered for a hate that it had logically long ceased to deserve.
