Excerpt from Men Letters Enthusiastic lovers of golf have been heard to justify their enthusiasm by alleging that their favourite game can be played from morning till night, from the first of january to the 3rst of December, and from the schoolroom to the grave. The boy who loves Homer and Virgil makes friends for life. They are no fair weather companions. They remained with Tennyson till his death. They moulded and coloured his verse. Tennyson was the first to describe (enone deserted by Paris, as Ariadne was deserted by Theseus, but with no Dionysus to console her. Everybody remembers the opening lines.
