He was taught at St. Paul's School, and his tutor at home was Thomas Young, for whom he conceived a life-long admiration. From St. Paul's he went, at the age Of sixteen, to Christ's College, Cambridge, already an aecom plished scholar who wrote Latin almost as a native language, a boy of such purity and personal beauty that he was nick named The Lady of Christ's.
