The recent advent of novel sophisticated NMR techniques enables the measurement of NMR spectra of solids comparable in resolution to those of liquids. Within a few short years, high- resolution solid-state NMR spectroscopy has developed to a new, effective, and widely used means in elucidating subtle details of the structural properties of a wide range of different kinds of solid materials. High-resolution solid-state NMR has recently been extensively applied to study structure and solid-state reactions of inorganic silicates, aluminosilicates and, in particular, zeolites. In addition, a variety of NMR methods including conventional FT NMR techniques have been successfully used to investigate sorbate-sorbent interactions and the structure of adsorbed molecules. This book shows that the dramatic development during the last decade has provided a wealth of new and hitherto unattainable information which has greatly contributed to a better understanding of the structural and physico-chemical properties of these important classes of materials. An account is given on the wide range of applications of multinuclear high-resolution solid-state NMR spectroscopy in silicate and zeolite science, with special emphasis on the various kinds of chemical information retrievable from the NMR experiments. Although a concise survey is given on the basic principles and methods of high-resolution solid-state NMR, some familiarity with the general fundamentals of NMR spectroscopy would be helpful in reading this monograph.
