The astonishing New York Times bestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist's own stroke led to enlightenment On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover. For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by "stepping to the right" of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by "brain chatter." Reaching wide audiences through her talk at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference and her appearance on Oprah's online Soul Series, Taylor provides a valuable recovery guide for those touched by brain injury and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.

A fascinating page-turner
Even though I knew the outcome, I was gripped by the details. I gained valuable insights about left and right brain functions, and salute the author for her candour and strength.

An awe-inspiring book.
Reading of Jill Bolte Taylor's massive stroke, and her courage and intelligence during the shutting down of the left side of her brain is awe-inspiring and rather like taking a ride on a roller-coaster! It's a 'nail biter'. She tells of her experience with calmness, generosity and an underlying excitement that she is able to enlighten us as to the intricacies of the brain. This is not only a book with the plot of a lifetime (it would make a dynamic movie), but it is invaluable to us mortals who want to know more about that most important part of our body, and use that knowledge to tell us why we behave as we do. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the book is the read of the century.

My Stroke of Insight
A phenomenal reading experience... at once spiritual as well as informative for the reader, experiential and contemplative from the author's perspective;. A brain scientist contemplating the effects of her own stroke which gravely disabled the left hemisphere of her brain, initially permitting only the right hemisphere to function. She discovered parts of her consciousness and capabilities that had been dormant prior to her stroke, her "right brain" creativity, and an appreciation of being conscious purely in the present. One considers the parallels of her right hemisphere experience to the practice of meditation. She recovered left brain functioning over a ten year period. Reading her account was an unforgettble experience.
